San Juan (IPA: [San xwan]) or St. John 5 6 officially City Municipality Capital St. John the Baptist (in Spanish: Municipio de la Ciudad Capital San Juan Bautista) is the capital and most populous municipality of Puerto Rico. According to the 2000 census, the municipality has a population of 434 374 inhabitants, and the city 421 958. San Juan was founded by Spanish colonists in 1521, who called it Ciudad de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico City). The capital of Puerto Rico is the oldest city in the United States established by the Europeans, followed by St. Augustine, Fla., and the second oldest in the Americas to be established by the Europeans, after Santo Domingo, in the Republic Dominicana.7 Several buildings historical are located in San Juan, among the most remarkable defensive fortifications of the old city, the forts San Felipe del Morro and San Cristóbal, and La Fortaleza, the oldest official residence in continuous use in the Americas.

Today, San Juan is one of the most important ports of Puerto Rico, and 8 industrial center, financial, cultural and tourist center of the island. The population of the metropolitan area was 2,450,292 inhabitants in the 2000 census, ie, more than 60% of the population lives and works in this área.2. The city has been home to numerous major sporting events such as the Pan American Games 1979 Games Central American and the Caribbean 1966, one of the venues of the World Baseball Classic in 2006 and 2009, and the Caribbean Series.

Originally, the city of San Juan was called Puerto Rico, while the whole island was called San Juan Bautista. The capital of the island and the names were later changed accidentally.
